With experience in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), Sambo, Jeet Kune Do, Wing Chun, Shooto Wrestling, and around 22 other disciplines, it’s fair to say that Roy Harris has extensive knowledge in martial arts and different fighting styles. Working with the Los Angeles Police Department and the American Society of Law Enforcement Trainers, he is highly regarded in the industry and respected all around the world. How did he earn his reputation and how does he help those looking to learn a martial art?
Roy Harris Biography
After reading Bruce Lee’s Fighting Methods: Basic Training in 1981, Roy Harris was hooked and started training in the art of combat. Though living in Minnesota at the time, he eventually moved to California in 1986 because he wanted to learn from some of the famous martial arts coaches who had settled on the West coast.
Soon enough, he was learning from one of Bruce Lee’s former students, Dan Inosanto. Master in Eskrima, Jeet Kune Do, and other martial arts, Inosanto was fairly open-minded when it came to the different art styles and this allowed Harris to discover BJJ.
Around ten years after his first insight into the world of combat, Harris attended a BJJ class at the Torrance Gracie Academy. As well as group classes with Royce and Rickson, Harris had one-to-one sessions with Royler and quickly earned the blue belt. Naturally gifted, he continued classes at the Gracie Academy and actually took up a role at the University of California where he would teach students self-defense. From here, the teaching bug had caught him and he went on to hone his craft in the coming years.
Roy Harris as a Teacher
Since the 1980s, Roy Harris has been teaching people of all ages and skill levels about various martial arts; with a particular focus on BJJ. As well as thousands of classes, his work, and passion for the sports have taken him to hundreds of seminars across 24 different countries. With this in mind, you might think that he is impossible to contact but this couldn’t be further from the truth. It might be as easy as contacting us!
Although getting older (who isn’t!), Roy Harris is still running a website that offers people from around the world to get in touch via email or phone. On his website, he claims to be ‘confident’ that he can answer most questions and anybody who lives nearby can send an email to set up private or semi-private training. If we refer to his website once again, he says his private lessons have enabled him to meet NFL lineman, physicians, CEOs, housewives, and even a vice Mayor.
In terms of his training style, he claims to offer a simplistic and personalized experience with martial arts. As well as basic combat, he teaches physical fitness training, arrest, and control (for police departments, security companies, etc.), and self-defense. Whether you want to learn some self-defense or even have ambitions for something bigger, there aren’t many more iconic figures than Roy Harris from which to learn. In the past, his students have gone on to fight (and be successful) in King of the Cage, Rumble in the Cage, Bellator, and even the UFC.
For seventeen years he ran a martial arts academy in San Diego but eventually moved onto private contracts and lessons. Considering he has trained thirty students all the way from white belt to black belt in BJJ, while also teaching dozens of instructors in Bruce Lee’s own training techniques and styles, it’s no surprise that Roy Harris is so admired all over the globe!
